Background
Michel Rivero was born in Cuba, where he grew up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of the island. From an early age, he developed a deep connection with music, particularly Latin percussion and songs from across Latin America— influences that continue to shape his artistic voice today.
“How lucky I was to have such beautiful teachers in elementary and high school. They set me on a musical journey that I continue to this day and planted the seeds within me. My heartfelt thanks to my creators, the dear Nuria García and Yamilé García, nationally renowned for their teaching, for the magic they shared with me and so many other fortunate souls.”
He studied music and graduated in 2005 from the Art Instructor School “Eduardo Garcia Delgado” (La Habana), where he learned the fundamentals of music theory and gained proficiency on multiple instruments. The program also developed his multidisciplinary skills, fostering creativity across different art forms, and emphasized community-oriented teaching, collaboration, and engaging diverse audiences through music.
In 2013, Michel completed a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies at the University of Havana, after seven years of advanced-level study in the social sciences. Even while fully immersed in his studies, he never stopped playing music—continuing to learn, experiment, and grow as a musician alongside his academic journey.
“Another twist of fate. Suddenly, I found myself teaching children and adults in my community of La Lisa in Havana, sharing all my knowledge and passion for music. It was easy to engage, explore, and learn in the wonderful world of amateur art. There wouldn’t be enough time to mention all the projects and groups I was part of, but without a doubt, the choir Voces de Ébano, under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Julián Jiménez, marked a turning point in my career as a singer. Thanks to all its members for enduring so many years of cantatas and joyful chaos.”
“Thanks to the group Con Fusión, I learned and developed my own way of playing the guitar and my desire to write songs. What times those were! Alongside Guillermo Reyes, Tahimy Rodríguez, and Danaysi Junqué, I grew and came to understand that being original and creative is the best and only way to make sincere art — art that brings joy to others, but above all, to oneself.”
After moving to Canada in 2016, Rivero first gained recognition as a founding member of the duo Sweet SantaFe, touring extensively and releasing the album Santa Fe (2017) and the EP Dichoso (2021). These years of performance helped define my intimate stage style and strong connection with listeners.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Christine Baxter for everything she has done for me, and for the invaluable time, guidance, and unforgettable experiences we shared during our journey with Sweet SantaFe. Moving to a new country was both challenging and transformative, and her patience, support, and collaboration made this experience not only possible but deeply meaningful.”
In 2021, Michel settled in Victoria, British Columbia, where he became an active presence in the local music community. My work reflects a blend of cultures, combining Cuban roots with elements of folk, jazz, and contemporary songwriting.
“I’ve had the incredible opportunity to perform with world-class Cuban musicians here in Canada, including the Orquesta Obatalá, the Miguelito Valdés Trio, José Sánchez, Adonis Puentes and many more, playing Cuban tres and bass—an experience that continues to inspire me every day. Connecting with the Latin community and sharing our music at the “Bard and Banker” on Tuesday nights has been a true joy.”
“I was thrilled to present my first solo shows at venues like “Hermann’s Jazz Club” and “The Coda”, bringing my own voice and songs to new audiences. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue growing as an artist and entrepreneur, exploring new collaborations, expanding my musical horizons, and sharing the richness of Latin and Cuban traditions with ever wider audiences.”
Today, as a solo artist, producer, and music publisher, I continue to create and share original work that emphasizes emotional authenticity, cultural dialogue, and the timeless power of song.
“The future is now.” That’s how I approach each day, moving closer to my goals while embracing every opportunity to grow as an artist. I continue to dream boldly, crafting a full-time musical journey that I hope will connect, and resonate with people around the world.”
